Would like some input on the application of 410.18 and 250.130 to replacing a lighting fixture on an existing branch circuit with no equipment grounding conductor.

The way I read it if I was replacing say a plastic or porcelain, keyless or pull-chain lampholder on a branch circuit with no equipment ground then according to 410.18(B); that would be ok. However, if a fixture with exposed metal parts was placed on the same circuit then it would have to be grounded according to 250.130(C).

Or if I was replacing or adding onto the branch circuit with no equipment ground, I would have to connect the equipment ground also according to 250.130(C).

My confusion lies where 250.130(B) and 250.130(C)(5) refer to ungrounded systems. How would these sections be interpreted in lieu of 410.18 and the last sentence of the first paragraph of 250.130?

The lack of an equipment grounding conductor does not mean that you have an "ungrounded system". Ungrounded systems are rare and are not generally permitted at the standard 120/240 voltage level. The white wire is the "grounded conductor". If you have a white wire and the system is code complaint, then you have a grounded system.

ok, that makes sense...how about my interpretation of 410.18 and 250.130 in regards to the two scenarios mentioned?
