I have to disagree with you here, the way the law is written any person can work on any electrical system in MA for free. No permit or inspection required.

Thank you for clarifying that. I would like your opinion. Do you think a person doing electrical work on a property that he is collecting rent on is doing work for hire?

Maybe a quick email to the state Board will clear it up, or maybe at those super secret inpectors meetings where you all talk about us.

I have had good luck with an email or two in clearing things up.

I want to say yes but I really don't think so.

In a way, a homeowner doing work in their own home receives a financial benefit directly by not paying an EC to do it and perhaps indirectly by raising the property value.

I think that 'for hire' probably has a legal definition that has to be considered. Where is Article 100 for our General Laws?

In most states an owner can pull permits to build his own house and do every trade and then after CO can sell it. No its not fore hire but sure is for profit.

I've read that law a few times.

The law does not have jurisdiiction over unlicensed work. neither does a inspector (in MA). so to say.

Actually I do not think an inspector has to issue a permit to an unlicensed individual. to apply some logic in this discussion , Why does a MA State application to perform electrical installations have a line for a license number. No number , no permit

Any one can do any thing they want untill someone stops them. The Board of Examiners does not encourage unlicensed individuals to perform electrical work.

The Board of Fire Prevention, does not encourage anyone to perform electrcal work without an electricians license.

I read your section. It does not grant nor deny permission for the HO or Landlord to do his own work. It simply does not discuss that issue at all. This section only refers to "work for hire" notification requirements.

Nominally the phrase "work for hire" in this usage means that people doing other types of work [free!?!] are not required to get a permit under this law. You need to research other places in the laws to find how much work is permitted by the HO or landlord. This law will not answer that question.

It may be indirect by stating that such work requires a permit. And some other law states that only "work for hire" persons may get a permit.

Of course not and I never thought they did.

But I doubt very much the board had much to do with crafting the language used in the statute.
