I got involved with a commercial job today where a 230V macerating pump is being installed for a sewer pit. The pump is cord and plug connected. The float switch needs to be hardwired.

Q: Can I hardwire the float to one side of the receptacle to control the pump? The float is single-pole. The plug will function as the disconnecting means.

As long as the switch is rated for the motor, yes, otherwise you may need to use a relay/contactor to interface the two.
