When the elevator controller is installed in the hoistway, is a dedicated space still required for the disconnecting means (NEC 2008 620.41(C)(1) and required branch circuits 620.22 (A) and (B) overcurrent devices. I've heard different things from different people. I've been told that the disconnecting means can be in a normal electrical room. Looking to hear what others have done or encountered with inspectors.

Just ask the elevator mechanic and/or their inspector. Anything you do will be wrong even if it's right.

Ask both and get two answers. Great fun ensues after.

I'm guessing you meant 620.21(C)(1)

Ideally there should be per 620.5 although there is an allowance since only qualified persons will be in there. You do the best you can, because the top of the hoistway is tight.
