Looking for any feedback or recommendations for protecting outlets in areas around machining, grinding, and welding equipment. I don't believe that there is any explicit code basis to require anything special here, but in practice I see areas where there is a lot of fine metal dust that builds up on and near equipment, especially near the grinders.

I was considering suggesting they install a weatherproof in-use cover on some of these receptacles to keep the open outlets protected. Good idea? Bad idea? Am I worrying too much?

If you're concerned about the dust building up a metal in-use style cover would work.

I think it is a good idea. Every workshop, maintenance type area I have been around usually had some type of protection. A lot of them were the outdoor, individual flip up type, typically a cast box with rigid conduit, and not a regular 4 sq with knockouts.

There are a variety but of course nothing is perfect and some of it is hand held angle grinders and such which are impractical to collect from. They have good ventilation but the heavy particles still build up.

Well, then put the intake next to the receptacle. That's where the concern is.
