I'm working in a house that still has some of the original knob & tube wiring. The dining room light is on a 3-way, and I would like to put in a dimmer switch, specifically Lutron's Maestro, at one location and keep the other existing switch. The issue is the 3-way wiring is a California? 3-way, as shown in this GIF I'm borrowing from another thread (thanks 480Sparky!). Can I make this work?Calif3wayanim.jpg

You're better off using a wireless product for this scenario. The Maestro needs one communication wire between dimmers and that is obviously not available with a California 3-way.

I appreciate your responses, thank you. Since I can't use the Maestro, or, I imagine, any other electronic dimmer, would a rotary-style dimmer work? I know it would be on the neutral side of the light at times...

That means that you cannot use a three wire dimmer, whether it uses the neutral or the EGC as a reference.
You might be able to use a two wire (series) dimmer
