Main Bonding at Main Panel & Transfer Switch

Homeowner's setup for his portable backup generator. AHJ told him he had to separate the N/G from the transfer switch and install a ground rod for his generator. The generator instructions only statement is to follow local rules. Nothing mentioned about swapping N/G back and forth from main panel and sub-panel.

The neutral is not switched so the ground rods are not needed as this is not an SDS.

I failed to mention that this was installed over twenty years ago with a 30-amp inlet on 6AWG. HO picked up a new larger generator and wanted to replace the 30-Amp generator inlet to a 50-Amp. The grounding electrode requirement comment from AHJ was a deer in the headlights moment though. So, I guess I am allowed to replace the 30-Amp inlet with a new 30-Amp but, not allowed to upgrade it with a 50-Amp?

Why wouldn't you be able to upgrade this to a 50 amp inlet? The #6 AWG conductors are large enough. Besides the inspector is 1 for 2, he's incorrect about the ground rod but the bonding jumper must be removed in the transfer equipment.
