1) *** Say I want to wire a mobile home service of 100 amps. The service pole is 200 amps. The service pole has a 200 amp main breaker. The mobile home panel has a 100 amp main breaker. I am being told it will require a breaker of 100 amps at each end of the service feeding the mobile home. (why)? the service wire is protected by both a 200 amp main breaker which acts as the main disconnect and the 100 amp breaker in the home acts as the fuse for the wire size of 100 amps.????????

2) I find panels inside homes newly wired with as many as 20 breakers installed without a main breaker, besides the disconnect outside at the meter. I thought the code stated "no more than 6 switches" in a panel?? without a main breaker.????

You didn't say how big the service wire was, from the service pole to the mobile home. If the wire is only #3 or #4 then you would need a 100 amp breaker to protect the smaller wire size. A 200 amp breaker can not protect a 100 amp conductor.

diggers,

The building requires a service disconnect. There is no code requirement that a panel have a main disconnect. As long as the outside disconnect has an overcurrent protective device with a rating that is equal to or less than the panel rating, there is no need for a main breaker in the panel.

Re: main breaker 2 questions

Thanks fellows, I have my answer now. The building, being the mobile home, will require a main because it is a building seperate of the trailer pole. The wire being fed out from the pole will need to be fused accordingly to wire size because it is seperate of the building. To sum it up , The mobile home is actualy a sub service and seperate building of the main service at the trailer pole. sorry I'm getting older and starting to have brain farts. Thank you so much for the info. Ed :D
