i am currently installing a 60 amp sub panel in my garage and the garage is attached to house i have a 60 amp breaker in my main panel and my sub panel will have 7 20 amp breakers will my sub panel need a 60 amp breaker for disconnect means? If so, then explain why in commercial work a sub panel does not need a main breaker if feed from a panel thats has a breaker that feeds that sub panel.

I like you're log in name:)

I don't think a main disconnect would be required. The only thing I know of that might require one is if an inspector considered your garage a separate building. Article 225.31 and 225.32 require a disconnecting means for each building or structure. Article 225 is titled "Outside Branch Circuits and Feeders". I'm not sure if it would make a difference if the feeder goes outside or underground.

Re: main breaker in sub panel

Unless there is some local issue there is no difference between commercial and residential with respect to your sub panel. If the garage is attached to the house no disconnect is required in the sub panel.

Re: main breaker in sub panel

Panels do not require local disconnects, buildings do. If the panel is in the same building as its power source and the feeder breaker is rated equal to or less than the panel rating a main is not required in the panel. If the panel is in a second building, the second building requires a means of disconnect, and if there are more than 6 breakers, the easiest way to provide the required building disconnect is with a main breaker in the panel.
