Guys,
I have a sub contractor that is installing a generator fed 3 phase grid. Power comes from the generator to the Main Distribution panel. All wiring and breakers are within correct load requirements as far as breaker size and wire load rating. The MDP is equipped with a main breaker and sub breakers to feed the sub panels. The sub panels that are fed out of the MDP do not have main breakers but the cables are terminated directly to the buss bars (where a main breaker would normally be installed)that feed the branch circuits. All of this equipment is in "line of sight" and properly labeled. I like to see a main breaker in the sub panels. Does the code prohibit this practice?

Since the feeders to the subpanels are properly protected at the MDP no further protection is required at the subpanels. Unless these panels were located at a separate building(s) than they would require a disconnecting means at that building.

As infinity has said, it is not required, and since it is not prohibited, it is allowed...but IMO not necessary. :)

The sub-panels do not even have to be "line of sight." They can be on other floors, and they still would not require a main breaker at the panel.
