Your help please as I am not based in the USA but wish to offer a mains powered entertainment product in the USA market and I want to get it right!
UL etc is no problem.
Issue is that this product is designed to be ON at all times and will be used one per room: think like a room speaker amplifier. Power consumption 10W on strandby and less than 250W running.
The unit requires no access for control etc after installation, and I anticipate that the unit would be concealed in 90% of installations. So would be located in a roof void or in a loft space. It is fully temperature protected.
Question is: are there any special requirements for the mains supplies for this type of product in the USA and Canada? Can anyone point me to the precise part of the wiring regs that cover this application maybe?
1. Is it OK to fit an IEC mains lead? Or should the mains lead be captive? Should it have a plug fitted? Or bare wires?
2. Would the supply for this product be a simple mains socket in the void? If so is it OK to soecify that an electrician fit this? Would it require to have a power switch elsewhere that IS accessible (as the actual socket will not be accessible after installation)
3. Any other special requirements or rules?
I am also not clear, and cannot easily google to the answer, about the situation regarding'low voltage' installers (home cinema guys etc) as opposed to manins voltage guys (real electricians). How is the crossover defined please. Is it simply the 54V threshold?
In anticipation of some scholarly assistance and guidance please.
Alan.
