If I recommend a "60A Mains Service" to a customer so that they can operate my industrial machine, what am I actually telling this customer? To me, the best I can do is give a minimum conductor ampacity, and the minimum and maximum feeder OCPD's that they can use with that minimum conductor ampacity.
If I tell someone to get a "60A Mains Service" then can they put a larger than 60A OCPD on it? If I calculate 60A as the minimum feeder OCPD based on the minimum feeder conductor ampacity, and tell the customer that it is their "Mains Service" recomendation, then they really cannot utilize the larger OCPD if needed. I believe I can only get "mains services" in 100A, 150A, 200A anyway.
Marketing wants a "Mains Service" recommendation. I do not think this is correct. I think the best we can give them is minimums conductor ampacities and minimum/maximum OCPD's.
