I recently started my own electrical company and was considering working for a maintenance company that subcontracts work out to me. Has anyone ever done this and is the pay worth it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks!

A few housing and construction numbers came out today. It wasn't pretty. Take the work where you can get it.

Its a company that handles maintenance for numerous restaurants, retail stores, etc. I will find out more about it by the end of the week. I just wanted to ask here to see if any other contractors had done work for such a maintenance company and to see if the money was worth it. Im not sure what percentage of the total contract they will keep.

I have dealt with these type companies in the past and will never do it again. Beware. They called and asked me to do a job. They said to go look at the job and call before I did any work to get approval to do the work. Then get a price on material/labor and call again to get approval on the bill. After work was completed, went round in circles fpor 2weeks faxing paperwork jumping through hoops. They never paid me. Another similar comp called and I did not do business w/them.

years back we stumbled onto a maintenance contract for a firm that owned multiple highrise apartment buildings...for about two years we had 2 to 4 men onsite at least once or twice a week depending on their needs...we did mostly minor stuff, GFI's for kitchens and baths,change out ballasts,replace fixtures,repair and update emergency lights ETC....it worked out very well for our firm and would highly recommend this type of work if you can get it...for "security reasons" all contractors had to be escorted by a maintenance staff worker at all times...thus after two years just about all of the staff workers had witnessed and or helped with all the work we did at least a couple hundred times...slowly they took on the work themselves...they were not buying into the "need a LICENSED electrician mindset"...so out the door we went...i still get an occasional call but nothing will ever get as good as it once was...

Thanks a lot for the feedback guys. This was actually my first posting on here and you guys sure got to it quick. I have used Mike Holt products and this forum a whole lot. Whenever I have a question on something or simply want to learn a bit I log in to the forum. I can honestly say that if it weren't for Mike Holt along with all the members of this forum I wouldn't know as much as I do. Thanks!

We have several that we do business with. First it is usually 45 days minimum to get paid. They will send you a not to exceed price before you go out once thier you have to decide if you can do it or if it will cost more.Getting more money is not always easy they will want a line item estimate before approval.You are not the only EC they will use so if you pass on a call expect to be sent to the bottom of the list. If you do a job for $100 in your home town they will expect the same job to be $100 when it is two hours away. Last but not least fill out your paper work correctly or you will not get paid on time.

I do business with a company like that. I get paid net 5 days electronic deposit. You need to find a company that appreciates and fosters a relationship with their vendors.

I know, I know most don't.

Who waits for net 30 any more!!
