Man, woman found dead in hot tub

KING5.com Staff

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The King County Sheriff's Department says foul play has been ruled out in the deaths of two people found in a hot tub. But exactly what killed the 50-year-old man and the 42-year-old woman is a mystery.

Sheriff?s Spokesman John Urquhart says investigators are considering the deaths suspicious.

Neighbors said the man, who had been laid off from Boeing and had recently started a home-inspection business, was a solid fixture in the neighborhood.

"The police officers were checking out the house, and had everything shut down," said neighbor Kevin Smith.

But Smith reported seeing something more telling.

"Puget Power was out here, so it sounds like an electrical accident," he said.

The names of the man and woman have not been released. But Smith describes the man as a "really great carpenter, and worked great with his hands, he could fix any type of car."

Smith also says the man liked to work around the house. But he did not know if the homeowner or someone else did the electrical work on the hot tub. ...............

As of this morning's paper (the incident was in my side of the world, so it was covered in my local newspaper), the names of the victims were released, but the cause of death was not yet determined. I do not like the way the papers pointed towards a possible electrocution, with no basis in fact to back up that conjecture. But I will admit that I can't think of a more likely cause for this tragedy.

Sounds suspiciously like Mr. "DIY" may have swam in the wrong trade pool.

If this is the cause, it's definitely too bad he had to die to learn the lesson.

Even if this isn't the case here, hopefully the publicity will stop some other Harry HO's from playing with electricity. It may even save a life or too.

Wishfull thinking? ...maybe!

Learning the cause might help a few others. Would suspect issue to be bad wiring but untill inspected is questionable. Why would an electric company be there ? Cover up for bad work ? County chief electrical inspector is who should be there first.

Wishfull thinking? ...maybe!

Certainly wishfull thinking. It's an interesting outcome of refined safety rules and regulations + more educated workmen + better tools and devices that IMO has resulted in the average joe thinking electrical safety is a joke. I bet back in the day when the NEC was still young people were much more aware of not messing around with what they don't understand. And also, and this coming from a younger guy who uses the internet so often he barely watches TV (if ever), if these DIY realized how horribly, ridiculously simplified & incomplete a lot of the information that's posted all over the web is (blogs, forums other than MH of course ;), DIY instructions, etc. etc.) they would think twice before doing something that results in such tragic news.

Booze and hot water can kill too , I wonder the age and condition of the folks ,... in any event ,very sad indeed.

Both dying sure makes it look more likely.

He was 50; she was 42. I don't think booze and hot water would have gotten them both. I can only think of one thing that would, given the news report that there was no evidence of foul play. Sad indeed.

I haven't seen a followup story. Sad to say, but the incident is no longer "news." I doubt the newspaper will print the outcome of the investigation.

Could have been a lot of things. I wouldn't rush to condem the wiring to fast if I was anyone. Lets say it was wired without a GFI and there was a ground fault. That would take place in the heater or in a pump. These units are usually bonded at those points. That should have tripped the breaker. Doesn't seem like current would "sneak" out of that area and "wander" into the tub. Lets say really bad wiring, no ground. So a fault would do.. nothing until some steps out of the tub. They were in the tub. Both of them. I wouldn't rule out drugs, suicide or homicide.
