A project manager just came by and asked me if you could mix 480V cable in the same manhole with 5kV. My knee jerk reaction was NO. But I'm not sure.

Anybody know the answer. This is not a utility owned manhole so the NEC applies.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Utility Owned: I just did a job like this with medium voltage and switches, and JCPLs (utility) response was that the primary cables were the only cables allowed in the manhole. Technically, the man whole is for their use, but the custormer pays for it. G

However, this is JCPL in New Jersey. I would say no, because the main purpose is to provide access to primary cabling, and the utility doesn't want to be bother with the secondary. Try using a hand hole on the secondary side if you need something, they are smaller and cheaper.

Customer owned: I think of a hand hole or man hole as an over sized junction box, and would you mix 208v and 480V in the same junction box??

Lady :)
