Mantle outlet

Is it still allowed to install a receptacle on the top surface of a mantle? This one is wood and the outlet would be recessed. Thank you.

I'll second or third that Yes it is allowed. I always would put it on a wall switch for convenience.

That's why they were there in original early 20th century homes.

Now with battery clocks or antique clock guys using wind up mantle clocks, they are just used for decorative holiday lighting?:?

I think there was a thread about this just not to long ago. Is the OP referring to having the receptacle in an face up position technically requiring some sort of protection of foreign objects falling into it or does that only apply to floor receptacles?

Floor and counter top I believe.
