Fellers I got a question maybe you can answer.

Is it required or necessary to switch the neutral on a manuel transfer switch, single phase 240/120 residential? Or can I use a double pole double throw and have the utility power and generator neutral on same buss?

I have always used a 3 pole double throw to switch between utility and generator, so the neutrals are disconnected, but is it a problem if they are not. Mainly when the power comes back on and they are connected on the neutral buss.

If not, it is a lot cheaper for 2 pole, but want to be safe.

Thanks for any input. Have a great Superbowl weekend.

You need to keep in mind that grounding and neutral bonding is treated differently in each situation. If the transfer switch does not switch the neutral the generator is not considered a separately derived system, if the TS does switch the neutral the generator is an SDS requiring different bonding/grounding in each case.

also i believe the generator shouldnt have neutral bonded (although i think most do) if the transfer switch does not switch the neutral
