article 604 securing and fastening..604.6E was added to the 2002 NEC code this has caused some deep discussions with the AHU for supporting Manufacturing wiring systems under access floors in the office enviroment. Article 604 covers MWS and under supporting them it refers you back to the type of wiring used.which in my case is flexible metal conduit. The inspectors are requiring us to support & SECURE!!!!The code is specific in saying supporting does not say secure in the 604.6E. now and this is under an access floor. This is a in a office space. the concrete slab is the support...but why secure it this system is designed for easy relocation and defeats its purpose by securing it in place..this is like a computer room area under the floor for easy relocation of the power in those areas it does not need securring. I understand that in the ceiling this would be required and should be.. this needs to be clarified... please e-mail me back your comments at harrycii@aol.com

Re: Manufactured wiring systems

Sorry, 348.30 states: "FMC shall be securely fastened in place and supported in accordance with 34830(A) and (B)." But it does allow unsecured sections where fished. Are you fishing?

Re: Manufactured wiring systems

I somewhat agree but, 604.6E specifically says support no mention of secure...and it does not address under access floors.. Most wiring under a computer room floor is not secured...I am just saying that this should be addressed used in this manor. This article is addressing ceilings and in wall not in underfloor. The code says listed for use with a UL label. It is designed not to be secured under access floors as per the manufactured's listing... your thought?

Re: Manufactured wiring systems

Just my 0.02 worth but are you installing this FMC on a floor under a raised floor as you indicated and are trying to use a code section for a manufactured system. It does not apply unless you are the manufacturer. If this is a renovation and the raised floor is being installed then you would have to follow the rules forsecuring and supporting FMC. IMO only

Re: Manufactured wiring systems

Caj, This is a UL listed Manufactured wiring system...it is being installed under an access floor on a concrete slab. listed for use in a plenum per 300.22C. So the 604 artical does apply..any opinions?

604.6(E) states that you shall support it by referring to the applicable cable or conduit article. This is sending you back to article 348, which states it is to be secured.

I mis read your post as to what was happening with this instatlation. So if this is a listed manufactured wiring system the AHJ would not have jurisdiction over it.
"it is the intent of this Code that factory-installed internal wiring or the construction of equipment need not be inspected at the time of installation of the equipment, except to detect alterations or damage, if the equipment has been listed by a qualified electrical testing laboratory that is recognized as having the facilities described in the preceding paragraph and that requires suitability for installation in accordance with this Code.
