Has anyone had a "single phase" 230V motor that you've had to connect to either 240V "home" Voltage line-line or on two hot legs of a 208V wye, and had to use a VFD on top of all that?

I'm not getting a warm and fuzzy with the hookup instructions but also not finding anything in the code that says NO either.

common use for vfds. follow the manufacturer's instructions and you will be fine.
 
Utilization equipment with ratings of 115, 200, 230, 460, or 575V is always intended to be operated on the nominal supply system voltages of 120, 208, 240, 480, and 600V respectively.

A VFD rated for use on a 208V nominal supply will normally be rated for feeding a 230V motor. Single phase input VFDs are very common with 3 phase outputs. Single phase output VFDs are very rare.
 
there was just a good post about this titled

in the elec. calcs & engineering section about this, in re: 120deg apart on 2 legs of a 3phase
