I started my own company 6 months and I couldn't be happier. I am a controls engineer, and passed my PE a year ago. 95% of my work comes from from my last 2 former employees(I have been blessed by never burning a bridge!). I went on my own because it is a dream of mine and I didn't feel like my employer was on the right track, nor did I see my self fitting in long term. Well, that employer I get most of my work from hasn't been doing well and it mostly isn't because of the economy. I don't foresee myself continuing to get a lot of work from them this summer, and I am looking forward to finding new sources of work for myself. I am trying to market myself to Electrical Contracting companies to assist with controls and engineering work, which they don't commonly do. I have a list of electrical contractors and a letter already typed up that I plan on sending out, but I have been too busy with work. I plan on also pounding the pavement in person when I have time. If i can't find work I am hoping to work as an electrician for a local contractor to get more field experience.
I just have a couple questions for anyone out there:
For people who are 1 man shop. Engineering, Controls, or Electrician. How much of your time is waiting/bidding/waiting for the next job. 10, 25, 50%?
I am thinking about joining the local ABC Allentown( http://www.abceastpa.org/ ). Has an association like this proven helpful for anyone to network with other local contractors? Do you suggest another source.
Do you electrical contractors commonly utilize local talent outside your company for controls and electrical engineering? ..any suggestions on how should I market myself to you?
Sorry for the long post, Steve
