Just for a matter of conversation, I think somehow they ought to require electrical supply houses to carry "white" #6 and # 8 thhn wire since the code requires neutral to have a "permanent" marking on it. I have to go to Lowes or Home Depot and pay twice the price to stay within code, in my area. If you don't get white for the neutral, you risk the job being turned down. Wonder if a new "code" requirement could make them do it? Just ranting:)

we have no trouble getting green and white in smaller sizes.

if your favorite supplier does not stock it maybe a different supplier is in order or you could order it in advance or stock some if you are unable to order it the day before. Most supply houses can get just about anything next day.

I don't have any trouble getting white or green #6 as well here. But if someone could explain what safety hazard this presents by totally encircling a #6 THHN black conductor with white tape at its termination points that is not present when using a #4 THHN black conductor with white tape?

There is no real safety concern, just an effort to keep things somewhat regulated I guess.
