I want to prepare myself for the masters exam in Ga and I'm considering these 2 dvd sets to improve my chances.

First let me say that I was, and possibly still am, planning on taking an exam prep class that is held 3 nights a wk for 10 wks. I live probably 40 miles one way from the class site. Would these DVD sets, in your opinion, be as or more helpful than the exam prep class itself?

I don't have a lot of money laying around. The class is 300 plus gas back and forth and any books I may have to purchase. It's pushing my budget, well if it could reach it it'd be pushing my budget.

I've seen the 2005 12 disc DVD set on ebay going for around 180. Is anyone familiar with these sets and if so could I please get your opinion of my situation? Also, if there's anyone out there that has either of these sets and want to sell them, let me know how much you want for it.

I'm at the point where getting my license is a must. It's time for me to take the next step and further my career.

I'm just asking for opinions. Please reply if you have any useful info and thanks a bunch.

It has been almost 30 years since I received my license and I never took a code class. However, I suspect that having an individual to talk to and ask direct questions to may be beneficial. I know nothing of the DVD's.

Not sure where you live but I'm pretty sure that EC's that long ago were grandfathered around here. I know my previous employer holds an elec license and never took the exam either.

Yeah, I really wish I had someone to talk to about the code and tests etc. Now that I think about it, the co I work for now uses the elec license from the father that was probably also grandfathered. I better not say any more than that but he's no help to me.

The DVD's are out there and I'm sure someone here has viewed them and has an opinion on their "usefulness".

Thanks Dennis. I appreciate the quick reply.

Are these DVD's produced by Mike Holt? I recommend any of Mike's study material in printed form. I can't vouch for his video material, but I would imagine it is top quality.

I assure you I am not old enough to have been grandfather in. I took an all day test in Raleigh, nc and as long as I can remember the passing rate has been around 17%. It is an open code book test but they supply the books. You could bring a calculator.

For some reason I thought taking a class was cheating.:-? How silly that was... I basically read EC&M and anything else I could get my hands on to keep up with the codes.

Sorry. I didn't mean any disrespect. It just so happens that both of the EC's I've worked under were grandfathered. I may be completely wrong but I doubt either of them could pass the electrical exam.

I respect and admire your hard work and efforts. I'm just trying to get some advice about this 12 dvd set. I'm not sure I can afford to take that class at this time.

I've been a member here since 2003 but I read even before I joined. I know you know your stuff. I appreciate all of your input. Thanks.

I did not take offense to your post at all. Was just trying to give you some background. And yes I am old....:D but I am happy. Wish I had more hair but what the heck.

Jason,

I didn't do the DVD's, but did Mike Holt's Video Tapes back in 1992 (I know, dinosaur to you) and passed the Washington State Masters without a problem.

I take Mike's live classes every chance I get, and will evaluate his program this way -

Not big on big wordy explanations, but big on covering material, and talks in plain english! Will get you through the stuff that you need to know, that is, he focuses on making you a knowledgeable master, not just a person who can sit for "that state only" exam.

Biggest advantage of Video/DVD is that if you don't "get it" the first time, you can back up, and watch it again, maybe in the morning after a cup of coffee and "get it" that time around.

Monday morning, I'd call 1.888.NEC.CODE and talk to Holt enterprises, you'll find why they are the number one trainer. JMHO.

i bought the code changes dvd from the "mastering the 2008 code" set with my codebook. It was to the point, not alot of explaining but a few examples and illustrations and like I said it was just over the changes. The good thing about it is you have a reference to go back to. Can't say anything about the other 11 dvd's.
