Hello,
I would like to know if someone would/could recomend any particular book(s) that I could read in order to obtain a more indepth understanding of the electrical equipment/apparatus between the incoming power transmission lines, and the main panel. IE ... transformers and maintenance, capacitor banks, etcetera.
There are so many books to chose from, and some would require you to have a PHD in order to decipher what you were reading. I know that this is the Mike Holt forum but I'm sure there are other great books as well.

Next I'd like to know if any of you use the electricalc calculator for electrical calculations or do most 'Masters' stick with solving equations using the old fashioned way of writing it all out on paper or using a scientific calculator ?
Thanks,
Carl :)

Carl,
I think Mike's theory book and video series does a good job at explaining things and keeps it simple for the student.

As for calculators.....well i dont thing being a Master Electrician has anthing to do with it. I engage technology and use it any way possible to solve the problem. I also happen to keep a ElectiCalc calculator in the vehicle.....keeps it simple.

Now while doing math on paper is nice...and i do use paper when writing down things like ....each line when balancing a panel or each phase when sizing a transformer......but for things like complex ohms law( not simple ohms law), voltage drop and other things requiring complex components...well been there done that over 20+ years....now i just like results.....so to me using technology is great.......i use a calculator any chance get...

Agreed. If you use a PDA that runs the PALM OS, you can get some really awesome electrician/electrical engineering programs that will do some powerful stuff. Conduit fill calcs, transformer calcs, and stuff you probably won't ever need to calc.
