I have a 150 amp, 30 space, single phase panel with 6 one pole, 7 two pole and 10 "twin" single pole breakers. The panel is a Crouse-Hinds LC230EC.

Does anyone know the max circuits allowed ? Also in determining the max circuits - would this be considered 40 circuits (two poles counted as two circuits) or 23 circuits (two poles counted as one circuit) ?

Thanks for any help.

jam,

My guess would be it's a 30 Circuit Panel
If that's the case you've got 40 by my count, already 10 over.

(Look for a label inside the cover)

Even though there are 30 spaces for breakers it would depend on what is the panel rated for some panels are rated to take tandem breakers,as Bill said check the label for that particular panel. In any case no more than 42 if ul listed for 42.Homeline makes a 40 ct. panel that isn`t listed to use tandems so there it would be 40 max.

what you have is called a 30 / 40 assuming nobody installed wrong breakers. The max in a panel is 40 and there are a few out there with 42 to handle the with 2 unused part of nec.
You are maxed out so add a sub

i don't know about others but i prefer to never use piggyback breakers/tandems.They mess up your count on afci and gfci breakers as well as 2 poles. They are legal but why use them ?

Jim,

Where I am there's a popular style house called a 'Split-Level' where 1/2 of the lower level is below ground. This means that downstairs (where the panel is usually located) only has about 4ft of framed wall atop the Concrete. There's not enough height for a full size 40 space panel in there.

If rated for 40 yes it would be a 40 circuit panel. The max is 42 circuits not 40.As long as the panel is rated for 42 circuits you can max it out, didn`t the 2 circuit spare article go away in the 99 code change ? Or did iI miss something.
