Is the maximum number of outlets that can be placed on a general purpose branch circuit or small appliance branch circuit specified? If yes, please give the code reference.

Thanks,

Mike

The residential receptacles are figured as part of the unit electrical load at 3 Watts per square foot. Section 220.3(B)(10) Commercial is determined at 180 VA per strap, with demand applied above 10 KVA. This typically works out to 12 receptacles for a 20A circuit
These are minimums and may not be sufficient for the application. I usually follow the commercial requirements for dwelling units.

I was asking about residential. The reason I asked is that if you take the 3VA/SFT and also the requirements for where outlets shall be placed, you end up hanging a lot of outlets on a circuit.

The requirement for so many outlets is to reduce the use of extnsion cords that can be a hazard. It is not likely that all of the receptacles will be loaded up.

Scott has the idea down pat, it is a safety issue, not a design issue as far as the NEC is concerned. If you are concerned, you can add as many circuits as you like :) .
