A buddy today asked me how many sub panels are allowed in a residential setting? Obviously your not gonna install 3 100 amp subs on a 200 amp main loaded to the max, but just curious on a code reference.

There is no restriction, you could install a 100 amp sub panel in every room and still supply it all from a 200 amp service.

All that matters is the calculated load.

No limit.

You could (depending on your definition of "loaded"), and there isn't one.

You could load up your main panel with sub-panel feeds and it's perfectly okay. Many larger buildings are wired that way. A house is just a smaller building in this regard.
