Kholland, this probably would not be stated in a code. It would however be answered by physical wiring as far as a
series circuit is concerned. If you are supervising a signal circuit you can only go "in and out" one time. This would mean TWO CABLES or FOUR CONDUCTORS.
In other words, you can only attach to the + and -terminals with two conductors each, and they can only be made continuous thru the terminal and not by twisting.
