Does anyone know what the maximum Id would be. We are using CE5 connectors, but different suppliers suggest completely different wire sizes as suitable.

Our Chinese supplier put 2x1mm^2 wires into the connector, and broke the plastic while crimping them. I think they seem far too big for the wire size, and different websites quote different minimum wire sizes.

Is there a code or guideline that is for how big the ID of a crimp connector should be versus the wire diameter inside?

As far as I know the only relationship between number and size of conductors and size/shape of crimp connector body that the NEC recognizes is the list of allowable wire size combinations published by each manufacturer.
It is possible the different manufacturers (and product details as well as crimp tool type) will list different ranges of wire size and number from other manufacturers for superficially identical connectors.

We use crimp connectors. But puting two conductors into one crimp is an absolute no no. Bad practice and failed inspections, not to mention the cost and embarrassment.
Also we use ratchet type crimp tools which are subject to annual inspection and calibration.
