Read Article 392 of The National Electrical Code. This article will guide you in the installation and sizing of Cable Tray and conductor fill for Cable Tray.

Were you able to get it?

392.10(A)(2)
That's the right code reference but it won't give the right answer... or should I say it will give the right answer, but it won't match the answer provided for the question.

Backing up a little, this is a bad question to put on any test without providing more info. First, the NEC does not give dimensions/areas of tray cable. Couple that with every manufacturers size/area will likely differ some. Heck, just with Okonite alone, they make four differnet types of single conductor tray cable (SCTC), and each is different in size/area.

Say just for instance the SCTC is RHW-2 and use Chapter 9, Table 5 figures, the correct answer will be 34
(26.00 in? – (4 ? 1.0082 in?)) ? 0.6291 in? = 34.9

PS: I just noticed the OP says the conductors are thw. Anyone ever seen thw tray cable?
