I understand that a hole that is bored in wood from one side of the house to the other is not a raceway, however, what if I had a group of say 10 holes that went all the way across the house with 20 wires in them. Would there be any argurment as to maybe consider this a raceway. The reason im stretching is so I can find reason to give ADT a mouthful regarding their alarm wire placement. (Woven through my wiring like a spider web)

Oh, if you can't find a valid argument, just make up something. I don't care. Actually, I come into this post, only kidding, but the more I think about it, I just want ADT to go away. I would cut their wires and use them to tie up my ladders but I'd lose the contractor. I really hope, in a way that these houses im doing all have nuisence alarm trips, so I can go behind them and point out what they are doing. Their installation people are just not trained well I guess.

None whatsoever... a raceway is, by definition, An enclosed channel...designed expressly... Bored holes would never fit that def. even on the 6th Sunday of the 13th month. To me, it sounds more like a chase.

What is ADT's arguement?

Sure they are.

Their employer demands maximum production and doesn't give a hoot.

They're giving their boss what they have to.

What a coincidence, I was going to ask a question along the same lines and it may have been answered here. Let me state it anyway just to make sure. So there is no code prohibiting either low voltage, or communications cables from being run in the same bored hole as NM? I was always told that this was against code but I could not find a reference in the code. I am doing a central vac and each port needs a 14-2 and a low voltage relay switch. Can I "spider-web" the low voltage with the NM? ;)

So your grip is that ADT is using your holes for their wires?

Re: Maybe the dumbest question ever but humor me.

The wires that are in the NM cable are sufficient to hold the voltage without anything shorting out or going to ground. The cable sheath adds a bit more insulation and protection. What is the problem? It is not like ADT is installing their cable inside the sheath of the NM cable. I see no problem unless the induction causes ADT problems. As long as all the circuit conductors are together, there will not be much induction. :D

I keep seeing the "electricians vs. LV guys" topic. I really don't understand it. Do they fill your holes with their wires before you have a chance to use your holes? Do they damage your cables after you've installed them?

Re: Maybe the dumbest question ever but humor me.

Back when I started wiring homes, Ma Bell prewired for phones. They could not run power tools then & all they had was those old brace & bits. A manual drill if you will. They would wait until all the trades were done & pull a mile of wire using any existing hole before pulling out their drill. :p

But it's ok for you to go drilling holes and running wires through the carpenters nice framing? :D
Really what is your issue with this?

felon make sure its not a local code I know in gulf shores I cant run my tv or phone through the same holes as my romex good ol local ahj

Re: Maybe the dumbest question ever but humor me.

You should consider this type of installation a type of cable tray if you are worried about cable heating.

Actually, cable tray might actually be less work. You could use a radio controlled toy tank to pull in a cable pulling string.

Re: Maybe the dumbest question ever but humor me.

I am in KY, too. I am surprised that your AHJ in Lexington will accept that c__p. It violates the code for 'neat and workmanlike'. And it probly violates ADT's installation standards, too, if you could get a copy to read.

I wouldn't be afraid to call the State Fire marshal to ask about it, too.

They were toying with a state certification for LV installers, but I don't know if it went thru or not.

This is only your opinion. This code "requirement" has no fact to back it up with any kind of enforcement whatsoever.
