mc cable and marking?

I am just wondering how other people are identifying the conductors of MC cable, where there is 480/277 and 208/120 voltages present at the building.

Are you phase taping the different systems or using other means?

Just curious as I have not done a lot of wiring outside of my little area.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: mc cable and marking?

We order it in Brown Orange Yellow Grey or Black Red Blue White colors...with green for a ground, of course.

Re: mc cable and marking?

We spray paint the box covers and label them, the local inspectors are on board with this.

FWIW the 2005 NEC does not require that you identify the conductors by phase, only by system.

You could now mark all your 208Y/120 phases black and all your 480Y/277 phases red.

We do the same thing.

For larger conductors, we - "usually" - order them colored as well.

wish that would catch on in this area....mostly tape here..the colored conductors sure make a nice looking job

Thanks for all the responses.

Here I see tape on the 277/480v conductors. The local supply houses are pretty small and can only stock a limited supply of material. They don't stock MC in anything but black, red, blue, white and green color. I had been wondering if other areas had a brown, yellow, purple, grey and green colored MC available or not.

In my area, we have a few large (~20 branches) supply store chains that carry a vast array of MC and AC cables, including all the 480 volts colors. It's quite amazing to walk through their warehouses and see the stuff they carry.

I was under the impression that identifying conductors by colors was an recommended and not required practice.

This came up today at our company meeting.

What are the requirements for identifying conductors and where in the code is that stated.

I am all for using conductor coloring to indicate the circuit voltage. But, I still would end up buying that equipment if I didn't put a meter on it before I energised the equipment.
