Was it the intent of the code to make us use plastic bushings in metal studs when installing mc cable i have one electrical inspector making us use them.

300.4 Requires bushings in metal studs for type NM cable and ENT but not MC cable. Where are you seeing that they are required for MC cable?

Dave,
The reference in 330.30(A) to 300.4 would permit the installation of the MC through the holes in the studs without out additional securing or supports.

Curt:

I see 300.4(B1) where NM requires a bushing or grommet in metal studs but where is it stated for ENT?

I agree with you that they don't appear to be required to ENT. I didn't read 300.4 last night, I just posted from memory and I thought they were required for ENT. I'll have to look back through some old code books to see if this changed but maybe they never were required and my memory is going. I don't use much ENT in metal stud work but can tell you from experience that it is almost impossible to pull it through punched holes without using plastic bushings because the groves catch on the studs.

The inspector was going by 330.17 and 300.4 he almost made us take the mc cable back out to put these in he finally let us the bushings to install them which also did'nt make any sense how do you get a ruling from the nec.

What ruling could they give? There is nothing in 300.4(B)about MC... this section speaks specifically about NM and ENT... heck, it's entitled "NM & ENT through Metal Framing"...how much more clear can it be? If an inspector can't read, then he probably can't read the ruling either.

Dana, as section 330.17 (MC cable) refers you to 300.4, the rules of 300.4 apply to MC cable.

I don't dispute 300.4(A) applies - this is the generic part of 300.4...it pertains to all cabling/wiring that gets too close to a wood stud edge.

However when you arrive at 300.4(B) (Metal Framing)it specifically names those wiring methods addressed in that code section - NM & ENT.

A,B,C breaks up the code into different sections - I believe the NEC Code Style Manual (?) makes reference to the layout of the code. An exception in (B)(1) does not apply to (A)(1). The reason a new section (B) was created was to differentiate the applicable rules between different wiring situations.
