Article 330.10(A)(8) states,where not subject to physical damage MC cable shall be permitted as open runs of cable.
Does this mean it does not have to closely follow the surface and only needs to be supported every 6 feet,330.30

No, It deosn't say as unsupported runs of cable, just "as open runs of cable." The code is just specifying that Type MC can be a wiring system of its own, and does not need to be intregrated with another conduit system for support. 330.30 is exactly for the case of use as an open run.
