romex is color coded to identify the gauge, is there a way to tell the gauge of mc cable? I know the strip system is for the number of conductors.

the gauge is identified inside of the cable on the ribbon, (sometimes also on the conductors) or on the outer sheath 310.11 B 2 & exception 3

thank for the reply but i meant by just looking at the ouside jacket (ie romex). How does an inspector know what gaug it is unless he opens something up?

That should be checked on the rough inspection while things are still open anyway.

BTW the color coding of NM is entirely voluntary and there is no standard. A company could start making orange sheathed 14/2 at any time.
