'05 NEC hereabouts. Is ordinary MC cable ok to use for patient care room outlets? If not, where would I find a code ref. or explanation?
thanks

2005 NEC, Article 517. Check specific 517.13 (A) & (B). Standard MC would not be allowed since the armor does not comply with 250.118.

It "hides" behind the wording somewhat. 330.104 refers you to 250.118(10) & 250.122. In 250.118(10) "standard" MC is discussed in (a) the interlocked metal sheath type. You will note the "combined sheath & grounded conductor" make up the grounding means.
517.13 requires the raceway or sheath (by itself) qualify as a e.g.
The UL white book i n PJAZ (pg 230--'07) also discusses this.

(Ken, sorry I was in the book as you typed)

thanks. I was 99% sure specialty MC was required but I didn't know why. I hate admitting ignorance but oh well!

I sure am glad I found this bulletin board too. It's a shame that ICC changed their site up to where it is not as user friendly as it once was.
