Would it be illegal to fish a 12/4 mc to an exit and use the blue and red wires for the 6 volts to the remote head outside. This would allow me to fish only one cable, instead of two 12/2 cables. A j-box in the ceiling would have power in, a 12/4 to the exit, and a 12/2 {low voltage) to the remote head.

Re: mc cable

It sounds like you would have normal and emergency wiring in the same cable.

IMO that is a violation of 700.9(B).

That may be true. Unless of course the exit were fed by an emergency circuit to begin with.

Still a violation, you can only mix emergency circuits from the same source.

Bob,

You're right. I was thinking of an EM fed exit sign with a slave attachment and no battery backup. Then I believe that the source would be the same. Next question is do they even make such a thing?

Re: mc cable

I would talk to my AHJ. Because of the difficulty involved in the job,he might let you do that.If you can do it with separate wires, than do it. As long as the wires are rated at 600V, I don't see no problem. :p

Along with 700.9(B) there is this at the end of 700.12(E) which applies to emergency battery units.

Emergency luminaires (illumination fixtures) that obtain power from a unit equipment and are not part of the unit equipment shall be wired to the unit equipment as required by 700.9 and by one of the wiring methods of Chapter 3.

Those are not exceptions but regardless, none of those rules allow sharing a raceway or cable. :p
