MC Cable

Corrugated mc cable does not require an equipment grounding (bonding) conductor within the cable itself. The armor is used as the equipment grounding conductor. If corrugated mc cable is used in a hazardous (classified location) will an internal equipment grounding conductor be needed within the cable? And if so, where is that requirement listed?

Re: MC Cable

Drivetr,
The armor on MC Cable is not approved to be used as the equipment grounding path. MC Cable has a green equipment grounding conduct in it. I don't think that MC cable can be used in a classified location.

Re: MC Cable

Drivetr and Roger, look at 250.118(11) note the words listed and identified. I am only aware of of "smooth" type MC sheathing being listed and identified as a ground path, so unless the manufacturer will back up the corrugated type being listed and identified for such, it is not.

For application in hazardous areas look at 330.10(A)(10) this directs you to articles 501 through 505.

Re: MC Cable

The sheath of the smooth or corrugated tube Type MC cable or a combination of the sheath and a supplemental bare or unstriped green insulated conductor is suitable for use as the required equipment grounding conductor
This quote is from the UL General Information for Electrical Equipment, otherwise known as the 'White Book'. Also 250.118(11)(b)
The 'Interlocked type MC cable (Which most of the industry uses) is required to have an equipment grounding conductor, because the sheath is not approved for grounding purposes.
As far as the requirements for Hazardous locations, someone with more experience than I will have to answer that.

Re: MC Cable

There is armored cable made without a EGC but it is not MC cable. Trade name in or area is BX cable.
