MC Cable

I am doing a remodel in a hospital. I changed the location of several lights by only a few feet. Instead of piping in the lights I used the existing J boxes and made HFMC whips. DHEC came in and did an 80% inspection and failed me because some of my whips were 8 and 9 feet long, I was told they were not to be any longer than 6 feet per code. I changed them and piped in new boxes (you cant argue with DHEC inspectors) and started looking in th code book for answers. I cant find them and would like to know if anyone out there could tell me were to find this code if it exists. :-?

yes, in suspensded ceilings, ie. drop ceilings, whip can't be more then 6' without a support. Don't know code ref... sorry, gotta look for it

If It is supported by bat wings and all thread can they be longer than 6 feet?

Yes they can per the NEC, but specs and local or state codes may come in to play.

Have you provided your own support for the bat wings?

[That's still in the NEC right?:-? I haven't used a bat wing in years]

259.118(5)c flexible metal conduit mentions that it does not exceed 6ft. Maybe this is what he was thinking about.

Is there a local code or job spec that prevents what you have installed?

The prints didn't say anything about it and I did not check on the local codes. I am checking them on monday, (I want to stay as informed as I can). I have worked on several jobs before and used quite a bit of MC, but never run into that before. I live in Georgetown county SC, does anyone know the best place to find these local codes?

I would ask they inspector what we uses. What could be better than using the same code book or other rules?
