Gentlemen,

Anything inherently wrong with coiling excess lengths of MC above ceiling? They are being used for general branch circuit wiring and the coils are supported, but does anyone think we could have some induction issues here?

Good question....I don't think there would be any induction issues (unless you're talking about 30-50 feet in the coils) and I don't think there is any Code restrictions.

I would love to know the answer from our engineers and others who have deeper technical knowledge.

I would think that any magnetic fields would be canceled because inside each cable there is current flowing in both directions. However, you could have some problems with heating because of inadequate spacing.

It seems like many of the big box stores always have loops of MC up in the ceiling. I cannot see it as violation.

They use manufactured wiring systems in the stores. Precut and equipped with plugs and receptacles on each end, they plug right into the lights. You pretty much have to coil the excess. :)

Here in Austin, we have a local municipal ordinance prohibiting coiling excess MC. MC must be cut to length.

But by looking around at most open ceiling retail stores around here, I would say it is rarely enforced.

reloc is a listed system, not MC installed by a contractor so I would say that ordinance wouldnt apply.

Is the MC not going to heat up because the jacket acts as a shield? I know that romex and extension cords will heat up. I once met a pool installer who had his extension cord coiled up inside of a 5 gal. bucket with the male end poked out of a hole at the bottom. It was an easy way for him to store the cord and he had all his crews do the same thing. I told him it was dangerous and to stick his hand in the bucket and feel the heat coming off of the cord as he was testing a pump. That was the last time he ever used the bucket for that ;)
