MC-HL and 300.50 (C) Protection from Damage

I work in the Oil & Gas industry and most of our work is directly dealing with hazardous location and Article 500 - which means we use quite a bit of MC-HL cable with seal glands, etc. Mostly we also use cable tray systems so direct burial of the MC-HL, which the MC-HL is rated for, hasn't been a great concern. Now we are now using MC-HL in direct burial usage and the "300.50 (C) Protection from Damage" rules have us somewhat confused/concerned.
I'm wondering what others are doing... We intend on putting an oversized PVC conduit sleeve for the MC-HL to pass through from 18" below grade to the first j-box, the cable gland/seal and hub will be used at the j-box penetration, so the over sized PVC sleeve/protector will just float or be strapped to a strut depending on j-box height, but just left open ended... The open ended PVC sleeve/protector somewhat concerns me as well as the seemingly unnecessary PVC sleeve in general...
Any expertise or advice is appreciated - Thanks - Nick
