I was doing some side work and was told to install two flush mounted out side lights on an outside column in a commercial setting .He had me work off the reel that was 12 -2 , after runing the mc and snaking the mc through the columns I grabed the lights and noticed that they were emergency combo .so they should've been ran with 12-3 for the steady hot. When I told this to the ec he said just tape the grounding conductor red.I told him that the mc sheathing isn't rated to carry ground faults ,he said I no but you already ran it and it's a long run plus we don't gave any more 3wire left over . Can this instal cause a fire I really don't like doing things the wrong way .

The metallic jacket doesn't qualify as an EGC so the question is will it still be good enough to provide protection in the case of a fault. Testing would indicate that it probably is no good. IMO the length would have something to do with the jacket's real world ability to open the OCPD.
