mc to nm cut in box

my question is, can I put mc into a romex cut in box for the kitchen backsplash. by cutting 1/2 hole in back of box and using a mc connector.

Is this against code?

I am doing a condo which we are using mc.

my reason is that the Plastic works so much better with the wings that holds the box in, then the metal cut in boxes.

Re: mc to nm cut in box

We use clips that go onto the side of a metal old work box. I think Raco makes them. Using these and a cordless drill installing the box is just as quick as with a plastic old work box. We put the ground tails in the box in batch lot as we open the cases.

Re: mc to nm cut in box

My biggest question other than does it comply with manufacturers instructions is once you hit that first box (PVC)That box and any down the line are not grounded that is if all are pvc.
I go with JB on this one use old work box clips and metal boxes.
I think the AHJ would agree ;)

Re: mc to nm cut in box

We had a simular situation last year.Cabinet installers had templetes for plastic cut in boxes.Standard gangable metal boxes were a sloppy sit at best.Inspector wanted fmc, metal boxes and madison straps,Just an ugly ,cut waiting to happen, install.
I happened to be in an area where the chief asked me why we were using lc boxes madison straps and fmc in the islands . I was told you should know me by now.one inquisative toddler gets in there and its slice and dice city.I went back to the to the shop and told the purchasing agent get better prices on FLC and fittings in 1/2 and 3/4.Told the residential mgr when we run out of flex lets go to FLC for everything
w/h, a/h//u, condensors,,Since we plug connect all d.w and disp.Less stock on the truck.
go back to std pvc cut in boxes in islands.it has worked fine. Also 1 less took to hump around.

314.3 EX #1 & 2 You would need an internal bonding jumper between the MC connectors.

Re: mc to nm cut in box

However, putting grounding bushings inside of a 1 gang plastic box would chew up a lot of room.

One advantage of metal gangable boxes is that I can take 1 side off so that I can fold up the wires better. When doing old work with 3.5 inch deep boxes this helps a lot since I have to pull the outlet back out a few times to get a really good finish of the drywall or plaster. Most wood lath is too old to notch like in textbooks and you are better off to cut 2 pieces of lath completely and then use sheet metal to extend the box ears. Erico also makes a C-shaped device for extending box ears.

What I do with NM and MC cable is to loop wire the copper grounding wire around the grounding screw. If only 1 cable is going into the box ( I do a lot of old work ) it saves a splice which is also a weak point.

One innovation that the guys at work like is to cut off say 12 or 14 inches of grounding wire and loop the middle around the grounding screw to make a double ended pigtail. This frequently saves a Scotchlok and is cheaper than a 4 terminal ground bar.

When working with 3 gang and larger boxes I stick in a 7 terminal ground bar. If you are working with #10 wire for industrial outlets of different voltages it is a lifesaver. There is also a way to put two double ended pigtails into a terminal that is listed for 2 wires so as to have 4 pigtails sharing 1 terminal.
