Re: Mechanical Continuity

That's a good question and I am curious too, as all the switchboards I have worked on do not have a bottom there is not much choice.

PVC is nice because you need no bonding, when we have to come in with rigid we have to put bonding bushings on all the rigid.

Re: Mechanical Continuity

Nick, can you think of any other indoor electric equipment that is not totally enclosed and raceways enter without connectors?

I not saying this is bad or dangerous or that the code needs changing, it is just different from anything else we do.

Could I come into the top of the switch gear with PVC through a tight hole a few inches and just put on a flare end?

I think I would be cited for 300.12 Mechanical continuity, even if I had it supported as close as possible to the switch gear.

How about a typical transformer can I come up through the slab into the bottom of it with out a connector?

I had 2 - 4" PVCs coming in through a foundation wall that we needed to put a pull can on so we chiseled out the cement in order to get connectors on them to enter the can. Could I have just stubbed them into the back of the can and put a flare end on in the can?

This is no big deal to me, but with everything that's in the code I am surprised there is not a reference to this.

If there is a code reference to it could someone steer me to it?

Re: Mechanical Continuity

also 352.46 requires a bushing or adapter on the end of the pipe unless the enclosure, box or fitting provides equivalent protection..........
I agree this a a gray area and it would be a judgement call from the inspector,We did a truck stop recently and we installed wd brown electrical cabinets. They come with open bottom enclosures and pipe is stubbed up from slab and we used male adap.and bushings on pvc and mig bushings on the rigid and bonded the rigid. Was inspected passed done deal...................
