I'm working at a surgery center, and I'm getting ready to install med. gas alarm wiring, my question is does it need to be in conduit? I'm looking in NEC 2005- Article 725.11 (a) and (b), and I believe it does. And also in the med. gas room, which is approximately 8 x 20, the room has oxygen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and medical air bottles. The manifold enclosures need 120 volt, and also med. gas alarm wiring. I have nothing on my drawings on how to wire this room, so my question is because of the gases, will I need to run rigid pipe and seal offs to hook up the equipment?

All the med gas alarms I have wired have been Class 2 systems and are not required to be in conduit, see 517.30(C)(3)(5) and then the requirements of Class 2 circuits in 725.

I agree with Don about the storage space.

Med Gas Wiring

Just wanted to say thanks Don and Roger - I appreciate the help. Phil

Bonding of the med gas pipes may be required. We are doing some bonding of the med gas piping systems at our local hospital because they got gigged for the piping not being bonded by an IDPH inspector.
