What is the code regarding the maximum fuse size for a medium voltage 5kV switch (standalone)? The switch is rated for 1200 amps and I'm having trouble finding a fuse that interrupts at 1200 amps. I did find one at 1250 amps, is this acceptable.

Thanks.

Re: medium voltage fuse????

You can't stop there! A lot of different types of fuses are made with different curves. Either replace it with the original size and type fuse or redesign the entire system to make sure everything coordinates and the fuses actually protects at the proper levels.

I highly recommend getting in touch with the fuse representative of your choice (Bussmann, Gould, Little Fuse, Kearney, etc.) to help you find what you need. :D

Re: medium voltage fuse????

Charlie makes a good point.
You have the switch, is it a simple isolation switch or load break switch? What is the switch feeding? Is the switch sized correctly for that application as is the cable?
Then, what type of protection does the fuse have to provide? As Charlie said, there are many types of medium voltage "power and distribution class" fuses divided into two basic classes. current limiting and expulsion fuses. CL fuses can be E-rated helical or E-rated acid current limiting, current limiting for motor starters, current limiting for transformer, etc. Expulsion fuses can be either in or outdoor for use with fused switches, feeder circuit sectionizing, and power transformers.
Westinghouse had been one of the leading manufacturers of medium voltage fuses which is now Cutler-Hammer.
