One good source of information on MV splicing is vendors such as Raychem or 3M/Scotch. They can provide info on how their kits work which provides some insight on cable prep, electrical stresses, and why things are done certain ways. They can also help you with the different types of cables.

I learned OTJ and from vendors, so no good book recommendations.

Does anyone know any good books about medium voltage splicing?

Here is a good site, this is where you can get certified to do MV splices, many contracts will require this certification. http://www.ncscb.org/

Books are nice but MV cable splicing is an art that can only be learned throuhg proper hands on training. Doing acceptence tests of MV cables for 15 years I have seen about a 30% failure rate on instalations by non ncscb certified splicers, or guys who think all you need to do is follow the directions in the kit.
