Just in case you didn't read my last post, I have just started a part-time electrical contracting job in central NJ. I work full time as a teacher. I just got a job wiring an addition, and I think I'm going to get a service upgrade tomorrow. I haven't dealt with inspectors much before (my old boss always met the inspectors). I get out of work at 2:40, and probably wouldn't be able to meet an inspector until 3:00 at the earliest.

Could I schedule appointments with inspectors after 3:00? Should I have my customers meet the inspectors? Should I try to hire someone to meet inspectors?

Meeting Inspectors

Frank,
Most inspectors that I deal with will tell me an approximate time if I call them and ask first thing in the morning, before they get on the road. But scheduling an appointment? No, it generally doesn't work that way. You may be able to call the inspector and ask him to make your job his last stop. He may accommodate you, and he may not.
Good luck.

John

Just contact the inspections department and ask what their hours and procedures are. Our department generally does not require electrician to be on site. Just leave it open if it is an addition or new construction or have someone meet us if it involves going into a building already occupied. We are a part time department and only do inspections in the a.m. If you are required to be there for inspection and it is during the hours you work your teaching job, you may have to somehow make arrangements to be there.

The inspectors I deal with usually don't need to meet me; it's actually unusual for me to meet them in person. Their main concern is getting access to the jobsite, and they don't care about how (leave a door open, lockbox, someone will be there, etc.). As long as they can get in and see the work I did, they are happy.

Just about all my interaction with inspectors is over the phone.

I rarely see electricians on the job. Usually the general contractor will call for a "4 way" inspection that consists of a rough framing, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. Normally the electrician is done and long gone before the inspection. We do occasionally do separate rough inspections if someone wants us to.

I will meet with contractors if they call and make arrangements. I also deal with alot of people via the phone.
