Not sure of the purpose of 300v vs 500v in your question, since most meggers have a 50v and a 500v setting, but otherwise, I would certainly test home wiring with a 500 volt megger for its integrity. First ensuring that all surge, sensitive electronics, microwaves, washing machines, etc. were disconnected from the system.
