I would like to purchase a megger. Wondering what brand/model/functions are the best to have. Probobaly the more simple models will suit my needs. Testing general wiring, motors, ect. I tend to be a fan of FLUKE meters...most all of my meters are, except for my light meter, does fluke make those also??? Also, what do these gadgets cost???

I recomend the Mega-Tron 9000.

All kidding aside, stay tuned. You will get a wealth of great information on this subject from several members here.

I purchased a Fluke 1507 after reading all the great reviews on here. I'm still learning but so far seems to be a real nice piece of test equipment. Being able to select the different test voltages sure is nice. Put it on 50v to meggar a circuit first and it'll let you know if you accidentally left something connected before you apply full voltage. I don't think you can get that with a hand-crank meggar. And now that I own one, I couldn't live without it....

Mine was around $350 new off Ebay.

Yep. Just wait for Megger-Man Marc to feel his ears burning. :D

Sure you can. I had a 100-250-500-1000 hand-crank, I still keep a hand-crank on my truck, never know when voltage may not be available and sure as heck the batteries will be dead in the other one.

My mistake, now I know:cool:

If you like Fluke, I'd probably recommend the Fluke 1507 as an entry level megger. Might well be the only one you'll ever need. There are more simple meggers, but if you like Fluke, that's about their simplest with all the features you're likely to need.

For dirt simple and dirt cheap, consider also the Supco M-500 or the Extech 403360.

If you are doing motors you will want one that does DAR/PI for you, if you do many tests in one day you will want one with data storage and a USB connection for downloads.

i only have faith in the crank type --weak batteries and electronics don't always tell the real story. when energizing a 4000 amp bus - i like to cut out any major errors!

i have a mj159 and the fluke 1507
the mj159 was 1000 dollars and the 1507 cost about 400 or whatever. both work fine. you cant go wrong with any one. only problem with the mj159 is that its a hand crank and you would need to crank it and have a helper take readings down if you want to do a DAR test. the 1507 does that stuff automatically

True but you dont want to test transformers or motors with it, 10 minutes is a long time to crank

I carry 3 meggers a crank/ cord 120 VAC, cord and a battery connected battery. But I also wear suspenders with a belt.

I do not want to crank to megger a busway unless no 120 and the batteries are dead, I also carry loads of batteries.
