we have some old 40hp 3ph ac 460v ahu motors and chill pump motors, and i was wanting to meg them to check the insulation values,

will you get approximately the same values by unlugging the motor starter at the load side, versus unwiring the peckerhead and checking there?

There might be some value in checking from the load side of the contactor, since that would also be checking the conductors in the raceway to the motor at the same time. Plus, it's easier. Who wants to mess around in a peckerhead box that's already made up?

Inspect the M-JB

Inspect the M-JB

I always include a inspection of the motor junction box, (PC), prior to megger test. I look for loose or poorly terminated power connections, and a missing or poorly grounded connection. Poor grounding give false results...

thanks guys, your input is valuable and appreciated.

if you were going to buy a megger, which one would you get? price range less than 500.00

If you don't own one, anything is better than nothing. For your budget, I might recommend the Fluke 1507, or one from another manufacturer with similar specifications.
